Born in England as Charles Aubrey Smith, he had a long acting career on stage and in motion pictures in the persona of a British gentleman. On stage, he appeared in The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith (1895), The Light That Failed (1903), The Runaway (1911), The Constant Wife (1926), The Bachelor Father (1928), and Spring Again (1941), and in a small role in Johnston Forbes-Robertson's 1904 Hamlet. Smith became a respected character actor in Hollywood beginning in 1915.
