The writer and editor Deshler Welch wrote for newspapers in Buffalo, New York, for over a decade after the Civil War, followed by several years on New York City newspapers before becoming editor and founder of The Theatre (1886-1893), a pictorial magazine on the stage and allied arts. He also served as publicist for Augustin Daly and wrote a book about President Grover Cleveland.
