Named Joseph Jefferson Holland for the great actor Joseph Jefferson III, he was born in New York City, a son of actor George Holland and brother of actors George Holland and Edmund Milton Holland. He earned early recognition as Theseus in Augustin Daly's A Midsummer Night's Dream, then acted in comedies produced by Charles Frohman from 1890 to 1902. He joined the Lambs' Club in 1883, a membership continuing 43 years.
