Charles H. Hoyt's popular four-act farce opened at the Madison Square Theatre on 8 January 1894. Based on Hoyt's own experiences in politics, A Texas Steer satirized the collision of Washington, D.C., elitism with a populist legislator. Tyrone Power Sr. acted in a 1915 motion picture version. Will Rogers starred in a 1927 remake.
