King *Psammetichus I of Egypt recruited a number of peoples to fight as mercenaries on his behalf and to consolidate his victories against the *Assyrians and Ethiopians. These included the *Greeks, *Phoenicians and the Carians, a people who lived in Asia Minor. They continued to play an important role in Egypt's policy throughout the Twenty-sixth Dynasty, a situation which was not readily accepted by the native Egyptian population.
