The term used by Egyptologists for the period of Dynasty 1 and Dynasty 2; some also include Dynasty 3. The term Archaic Period is also used for this era. This period witnessed the development of the unitary Egyptian state; the growth of royal power as shown in the tombs at Abydos; and most importantly, the development of writing in the form of hieroglyphs.
