Dow Jones Industrial Average.
One of the oldest barometers of US equity markets. The DJIA or Dow Jones is watched by investors worldwide because it is the benchmark for equity prices in the world's largest stock market, and because of the importance of the US economy to the rest of the world. The index consists of only 30 of the largest US stocks listed on the NYSE. It is calculated as a simple arithmetic average of the constituent stock prices. There is no weighting for the market capitalization of the member companies, so that the same percentage change in the price of the smallest and of the largest constituents has the same effect on the index.
