Treasury bills are sold at a discount from face value and do not pay interest before maturity. The interest is the difference between the purchase price of the bill and the amount that is paid to you either at maturity (this amount is the face value) or when you sell the bill prior to maturity. Also known as T-bills. When issued by the UK government the usually have a maturity of 91 days. They pay no interest and hence are issued at a discount to nominal value. The minimum nominal value of UK T-bills is £5,000. They are usually denominated in sterling but may also be denominated in ECUs.
