Born out of the 1980s "grangers" from Seattle, Washington, this nonfashion look was influenced by a lack of fashion interest. Functional cargo pants (loose-fitting pants with numerous utility pockets) and Dr. Martens shoes are paired with finds at the local thrift store and untraditionally layered and mixed to create the look. Marc Jacobs brought grunge to the runway with his 1993 collection for Perry Ellis.
