In 1901, P. H. Hanes of North Carolina founded the P. H. Hanes Knitting Company and began manufacturing men's underwear. In 1972, Hanes launched L'eggs, stockings that were packaged in an egg-shaped container. In 1979, Sara Lee Branded Apparel bought Hanes and was instrumental is making it the most successful hosiery brand in U.S. fashion history. In addition, Hanes is rated number one in male and female underwear and socks.
