Born in a small town in New Jersey, Herman entered the fashion industry as designer and later the president of Mr. Mort, a women's clothing company that popularized "fashion at a price." He is a three-time winner of the Coty Award who went on to design loungewear and more recently is known as a leading "uniform designer." He has designed uniforms for McDonalds, United Airlines, Amtrak, Federal Express, TWA, Avis, and several cruise ship lines. Herman served as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Seventh on Sixth from 1992 until 2006.
