(WCL)
A trade union founded in 1920 under the name of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions. The WCL was a confederation of trade unions associated with the Christian Democratic parties of Europe. Its members consisted of Eastern Europe countries as well as Austria, Germany, and Italy. Although it remained independent of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), in 1968 the IFCTU changed its name to the WCL. The WCL was formally dissolved on October 31, 2006, when it merged with the ICFTU to form the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
