Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
This college was originally established in 1854 as an industrial education venue by a parochial vicar, Reverend M. McKenzie. There, boys were taught basic design skills. By 1859, the school was independent of the parish and, by 1884, consisted of approximately 100 male and female students studying art. In 1894, the school received a grant from the Technical Education Board of the London County Council. It soon began to educate equal numbers of artists and artisans. By 1961, more than 500 students were studying for a national diploma or a diploma in art and design. It received university status in 2004 and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The school is noted for its programs in fine arts, fashion, graphics, 3-D design, and performance. It has graduated many famous designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney.
