This retailer, which found its niche in the moderate price range, is not a discounter like Target, nor is it upscale like Nordstrom. Kohl's has captured the mid-market customers and supplied them with wide aisles for easy stroller navigation and plenty of merchandise to choose from, with a significant number of name brands. This small family-owned business was sold in 1972 and, in 1980, was purchased by management in a leveraged buyout. In 1992, the company went public and launched its expansion plan. By 2004, Kohl's was operating 637 stores.
