This department store opened in New York City by Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor in 1826. The store has a rich history of promoting American designers, beginning in 1932 with their president, Dorothy Shaver. Lord & Taylor eventually merged with the May Company group and was therefore included in the 2005 Federated buyout of the May Company. In 2006, Federated sold Lord & Taylor to NRDC Equity Partners for $1.195 billion.
