Douglas
Douglas m
Scottish and English: transferred use of the surname borne by what was one of the most powerful families in Scotland, the earls of Douglas and of Angus, also notorious in earlier times as Border reivers. Today this name is sometimes assumed to be connected with DOUGAL (SEE Dougal), but it seems more likely that the surname is derived from the place in the Southern Uplands of Scotland where the family had their stronghold. This is probably named with the Gaelic elements dubh black + glas stream.
Variant: Dùbhghlas (Gaelic).
Short form: Doug.
Pet form: Dougie.
