English: from an Old English personal name composed of the elements ecg edge (of a sword) + beorht bright, famous. It was borne by two English saints of the 8th century and by a 9th-century king of Wessex. It survived for a while after the Conquest, but fell out of use by the 14th century. It was briefly revived in the 19th century, but is now again completely out of fashion.
