Biblical name, meaning ‘embrace’ in Hebrew, borne by one of the twelve minor prophets, author of the book of the Bible that bears his name. The name is hardly, if ever, used in modern times, but was occasionally used by Puritans and Dissenters from the 17th century to the 19th.
