Amerigo m
Italian: an early byform of Enrico (see HENRY (SEE Henry)). Amerigo is found in Italian sources from c.1100, evidently already well established by that time. It was probably introduced into Italy by the Ostrogoths some six centuries earlier; they controlled Italy from 493 to 552, and the name does not seem to have been in use among the Lombards who succeeded them. Its most famous bearer was Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512), the Italian explorer and geographer who gave his name to the continent of America; it is sometimes used among Italian Americans in his honour.
