Amias m
English: rare, and of uncertain origin, possibly from the surname Amias, which is a local name for someone from Amiens in France. However, both surname and given name are rare. The ending -ias is found in biblical names (e.g. TOBIAS (SEE Tobias)), where it represents a Greek form of Hebrew -iyah ‘God’; Amias may sometimes have been chosen in the belief that it was a biblical name, reinforced by the fact that am- is the Latin root meaning ‘love’. See also AMIAZ (SEE Amiaz) and AMYAS (SEE Amyas).
