Welsh: traditional name composed of the elements il, el multitude + tud land, people. The name was borne by a famous Welsh saint (d. c.505) who founded the abbey of Llantwit (originally Llan-Illtut ‘church of Illtud’).
Variant: Illtyd (a modern spelling).
