French: from Iren(a)eus, Latin form of Greek Eirēnaios ‘peaceable’ (see IRENE (SEE Irene)). This was favoured as a given name by the early Christians. St Irenaeus (c.125–c.202) was bishop of Lyons and a major early father of the Church.
