Jewel
Jewel f
English: modern coinage from the vocabulary word meaning ‘gemstone’ (from Old French jouel, apparently a diminutive form of jou plaything, delight, Latin iocus). Use as a given name may derive from its use as a term of affection, or may have been suggested by the vogue in the 19th century for using words denoting particular gemstones as given names, e.g. BERYL (SEE Beryl), RUBY (SEE Ruby).
