Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese form of Latin Anicētus, a derivative of Greek Anikētos ‘unconquered’ or ‘unconquerable’, from a- not + nikein to conquer. This was the name of a 2nd-century pope of Syrian origin; see NIKITA (SEE Nikita).
