Russian: from the Greek personal name Antipas, a short form of Antipatēr, which means ‘like a father’, from the elements anti- like + patēr father. This name is mentioned in the Book of Revelation (2: 13), where the bearer is the first bishop of Pergamum, who was martyred there c.90. He is greatly revered in the Orthodox Church.
