Montgomery m
English: transferred use of the surname, originally a Norman baronial name from various places in Calvados. The placename is derived from Old French mont hill + the Germanic personal name Gomeric ‘man power’. It has never been common as a given name, although it was given additional currency by the actor Montgomery Clift (1920–66), and during and after the Second World War by the British field marshal, Bernard Montgomery (1887–1976).
