English and Irish: variant of PIERCE (SEE Pierce). It normally represents a transferred use of the English surname derived from the given name in the Middle Ages. It has been a popular name among Irish nationalists since the rising of 1916, led by the writer and educationist Patrick Henry Pearce; he was executed by the British and is regarded as a martyr to the nationalist cause.
