Arnold m
English and German: of Continental Germanic origin, composed of the elements arn eagle + wald ruler. It was introduced to Britain by the Normans. An early saint of this name, whose cult contributed to its popularity, was a musician at the court of Charlemagne. He is said to have been a Greek by birth; it is not clear when and how he acquired his Germanic name. It had died out in England by the end of the Middle Ages and was revived in the 19th century, along with a large number of other medieval Germanic names.
Variant: Arndt (N. German).
Short form: English: ARN.
