Sancho m
Spanish: of uncertain origin. The vernacular form Sancho and the Latin Sanctius are used interchangeably in medieval documents, and it is possible that Sancho is derived from Sanctius, a derivative of sanctus holy. On the other hand, the phonetic development is not regular, and it is possible that Sanctius is a Latinized form of a name of different origin. St Sancho or Sanctius was martyred at Cordoba by the Moors in 851, but the name is inescapably associated now with Sancho Panza, the dumpy, long-suffering, commonsensical squire of Don Quixote in Cervantes' novel (1605–15).
Feminine forms: Sanch(i)a.
