U.S.: from the Greek form (Kyros) of the name of several kings of Persia, most notably Cyrus the Great (d. 529 BC). The origin of the name is not known, but in the early Christian period it was associated with Greek kyrios lord, and borne by various saints, including an Egyptian martyr and a bishop of Carthage.
