English: transferred use of the surname, originally a local name for someone who lived in a dale or valley. It is now commonly used as a given name, especially in America, along with other monosyllabic surnames of topographical origin (cf. e.g. DELL (SEE Dell) and HALE (SEE Hale)). It is for the most part a male name, but occasionally also given to girls.
