Dolly f, m
1 (f.) English: originally (from the 16th century onwards) a pet form of DOROTHY (SEE Dorothy), but now more commonly used as a pet form of DOLORES (SEE Dolores) and as an independent given name (taken as being from the vocabulary word doll, although in fact this was derived from the pet name in the 17th century).
