Irish and Scottish Gaelic: name of great antiquity and disputed derivation. It has been suggested that it may be composed of Old Celtic elements meaning ‘yew’ and ‘born’, i.e. ‘born of the yew’. It is Anglicized in Ireland as OWEN (SEE Owen) and EUGENE (SEE Eugene), in Scotland as EWAN (SEE Ewan), Ewen, Euan, EVAN (SEE Evan), and sometimes HUGH (SEE Hugh).
Variant: Scottish Gaelic: Eòghann.
