Ignatius m
Late Latin name, derived from the old Roman family name Egnatius (of uncertain origin, possibly Etruscan). This was altered in the early Christian period by association with Latin ignis fire. It was borne by various early saints, and more recently by St Ignatius Loyola (1491–1556), who founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). In the modern English-speaking world it seems to be used exclusively by Roman Catholics. In Ireland it has been used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Eighneachán (see AENEAS (SEE Aeneas)).
Derivatives: French: Ignace. Italian: Ignazio. Spanish: Ignacio. German: Ignatz. Dutch: Ignaas. Polish: Ignacy. Czech: Ignác. Basque: Iñaki. See also INIGO (SEE Inigo).
Short form: Spanish: Nacio.
