Jared m
Biblical name, probably meaning ‘descent’ in Hebrew, borne by a descendant of Adam (Genesis 5: 15). According to the Book of Genesis, he became the father of Enoch at the age of 162, and lived for a further eight hundred years. This name was occasionally used by the Puritans; Dunkling records that it was briefly revived in the 1960s, for reasons that are not clear.
Variant: Yered (Hebrew).
