German: from an old Germanic personal name composed of the elements hlud fame + wīg warrior. It is thus etymologically the same as French LOUIS (SEE Louis). Ludwig was a royal and imperial name, especially in Bavaria, which Louis the German (Ludwig der Deutsche) had received as his portion of his father's empire when the latter divided it in 817.
