1 (f.) English: originally a medieval variant spelling of MARION (SEE Marion). However, in the 18th century, when combined names began to come into fashion, it was sometimes understood as a combination of MARY (SEE Mary) and ANN (SEE Ann).
2 (m.) Polish: from the Latin name Mariānus (see MARIANO (SEE Mariano)), often bestowed among Roman Catholics in honour of the Virgin Mary.
