Italian: of Germanic origin, composed of the elements ans divinity + helm helmet. This name seems to have been largely confined to Italy until brought to England by St Anselm, who was archbishop of Canterbury in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, and is regarded as one of the Doctors of the Church. He was born at Aosta in Piedmont.
