French: from the medieval Germanic name Odila (a derivative of the vocabulary element od riches, prosperity, fortune; cf. OTTO (SEE Otto)). This was the name of an 8th-century saint who founded a Benedictine convent at what is now Odilienburg in Alsace. She is the patron saint of Alsace. See also OTTILIE (SEE Ottilie).
