Scottish: of Norman French origin, from Continental Germanic, composed of the elements ercan genuine + bald bold, brave. It has always been largely associated with Scotland, where it is in regular use as the English equivalent of Scottish Gaelic Gilleasbaig (see GILLESPIE (SEE Gillespie)).
