Rachel f
English, French, and German: biblical name meaning ‘ewe’ in Hebrew. This was borne by the beloved wife of Jacob and mother (after long barrenness) of Joseph (Genesis 28–35) and of Benjamin, at whose birth she died. In the Middle Ages and later this was a characteristically Jewish name. It is still extremely popular among Jews, but is now widely used among Gentiles as well. In Scotland it has long been used as an Anglicized form of Raghnaid (see RAGHNAILT (SEE Raghnailt)).
