Spanish: of Germanic (Visigothic) origin, composed of the elements hrōd fame and rīc power, and so a cognate of RODERICK (SEE Roderick), which represents an Anglicized form of it. It was the name of the last king of the Visigoths, who was defeated by the Moors in 711, and of a saint martyred under the Moors at Cordoba in 857. It is now sometimes used in the English-speaking world, but mainly in families of Hispanic descent.
