Sophia
Sophia f
From the Greek word meaning ‘wisdom’. The Eastern cult of St Sophia seems to be the result of misinterpretation of the phrase Hagia Sophia ‘holy wisdom’ as if it meant ‘St Sophia’. The name became popular in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. The heroine of Fielding's novel Tom Jones (1749) is called Sophia Weston. In recent years, its popularity has been further increased by the fame of the Italian film actress Sophia Loren (b. 1934). In the Scottish Highlands it has been used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Beathag (see BEATHAN (SEE Beathan)).
Derivatives: French, English, German: Sophie. Low German, Danish, Dutch: Sofie. Norwegian, Swedish: Sofia. Polish: Zofia. Czech: Zofie. Hungarian: Zsófia.
Pet forms: Low German: Fieke. Russian: Sonya. Polish: Zosia. Czech: Žofka.
