(1929–1945)
Jewish girl born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, who fled with her parents to Holland in 1933 after the Nazis seized power in Germany. During World War II, the Frank family went into hiding in the back part of their house (achterhuis) on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam because of the anti-Jewish mea sures of the Nazis. The family was eventually discovered and arrested in 1944 and deported to the Bergen-Belsen extermination camp, where Anne died in March 1945. Only her father survived the war. Anne Frank kept a diary from June 1942 to August 1944. Amsterdam historian Jan Romein drew attention to the manuscript, which was partially published in 1946 under the title Het Achterhuis and trans lated into several languages. An unexpurgated edition was published in 1986. The book was also adapted for the screen. The Anne Frank House is now a museum.
