The Dutch established trading posts not only in Indonesia but also on the Indian peninsula and Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), as of the 17th century, especially on the coasts of Koromandel, Guzeratte, Malabar, and Bengal. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Dutch were ousted by the French and the English. The Dutch pres ence on Ceylon has left more traces, especially in language and in law.
