Stuyvesant was appointed governor of the Caribbean island of Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles, in the service of the Dutch West India Com pany, in 1642. In 1646, he was reassigned to the colony of New Netherland in North America as director general. Stuyvesant was forced to accept the surrender of the colony and its capital New Am sterdam (New York) to the English.
