United States of America, relations with
Dutch American relationships have traditionally been strong. After World War II, the Netherlands attached great value to a transatlantic al liance. It welcomed Dutch-American defense cooperation within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which was founded in 1949. Friendly relations were also important because of the Nether lands Antilles in the Caribbean. In 2000, for example, the Nether lands signed an agreement with the United States to start a common war on drugs in this region. Now and again, some Americans have criticized specific Dutch positions (e.g., on abortion and euthana sia), but this has never disturbed the official relationship.
