Adenauer, Konrad
(1876-1967)
Germany's first postwar chancellor, who believed that there should be reconciliation between Germany and the Jewish people. He admitted the crimes committed by Germany against the Jewish people and negotiated two reparation agreements with Israel in the 1950s, thereby providing substantial economic support to the Jewish state in its early stage of growth.
