A major scientific institution located in Rehovot, focusing on fundamental research and higher education in the sciences. It developed out of the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, which was founded in 1934. It was conceived in the 1940s, and the first building of the Weizmann Institute was dedicated in 1949, named after Chaim Weizmann. The Weizmann Institute offers postgraduate instruction in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science in addition to science teaching and youth activities programs. The Weizmann Institute is a world-class academy for scientific and technical research as well as Israel's leading science center. It currently has a student body of approximately 2,500.
