The name applied to Jews who were persecuted and often imprisoned or subjected to internal exile by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for studying Hebrew, practicing Judaism, or requesting to immigrate (see ALIYA) to Israel. Natan Sharansky was among the most prominent of this group.
